Doug Brown's Museum of Unfinished Calligraphy
Doug Brown has been a prolific calligrapher producing thousands of works of art over a 30 year period. His best work has been framed and sold to his interior design clients, or was commissioned by civic groups, patrons, and other customers. This museum does not contain these works.
Most of what Doug Brown produced during his most active period were the calligraphic equivalent of a musician practicing his scales and arpeggios. Today there exist dozens of sketchbooks containing his alphabets, quotes, and doodles, and countless more were probably thrown out. This museum is not for these items.
Still, an amazing amount of Doug Brown's work bridges the space between the arpeggios and the framed works of art displayed in offices, public spaces, and living rooms scattered across California and beyond. There were many drafts building up to the final product. There were many ideas that flowed onto the page. There was even a drop of blood here and there. This museum is these items: Too good to throw away, too rough to frame, the inevitable misspellings, works in progress being saved to "get around to," a sample of the best works found in the basement of Doug Brown's home in Loveland, CO, where he retired in January 2007.
This online museum was developed to provide a space where Doug's work can be shared and appreciated. Julie took the initiative to sort through several dozen portfolios, with Rob photographing the more worthy artworks. Each work photographed was placed into a single repository, a portfolio stashed in an undisclosed location (Mom knows where), with the exception of a few framed items hanging on their walls. The rest of the portfolios are still down in the basement. We included etchings, drawings, and other items of interest. We hope that you will find this a convenient way to appreciate and honor Doug's work.
